Where do groundhogs live? Do they hibernate, migrate or stay active? This week we will be learning about groundhogs and we will be making our own predictions.

Pre-K Version: Sunflower Butter and Jelly We talked about why we can't have peanut butter at school. We remember learning about sunflower seeds in the Fall. We used the food processor to make our own sunflower seed butter. We used a bit of coconut oil and honey to add some flavor to it. We took a poll and found out that grape jelly is a favorite in our classroom (with strawberry a close second). The children then made their own sandwiches. We enjoyed them at snack time! :)
As we get ready for Kindergarten...Self Control has come up. We are responsible for our own bodies and doing the right thing. The children have been enjoying "Train Your Brain" to listen and follow directions. Where The Wild Things Are, is a classroom favorite book (among other ones as well). It is a book that is read often. In the first activity, the children drew a picture of their favorite part of the book. The second activity, they shared what they do when they are feeling "wild". For the final activity, they created their own "wild thing" and then told me a little about them (ie. name, where they live, what they like to eat, etc.). We have been missing a friend that moved to a new house out of state and no longer is in our classroom. So we decided to write him a letter to see how he is and to tell him what we have been doing for fun.
Creating dunes in the sand table. A few friends started talking about a "Dune Buggy" that they saw driving on the beach. They added a few "jeeps" and "monster trucks" to their dune creations.
Today in art class, with Mrs. L, the children made "Snow Paint".. using flour, salt and magical fairy dust glitter.
During our Community Circle...we have begun doing "Star Shine". The children can come up and sing a song of their choice (they can also ask for a friend to come up and sing with them). "Batman" (theme song)
The Laurel School will be closed on Monday 1-16 to observe Martin Luther King's Birthday (which is actually on the 15th, we learned). : )
It is hard to believe that it is January....feels like Spring! Outdoor Fun! Friends unite!, showing off ski medal! :) Making "pancakes"! "Cake Bake" shop "Do you want a cupcake or a big cake?" Fun with binoculars.."The trees look so green with moss!" Creating a page in our poetry journal.
*cutting out our planet Earth and gluing it onto our page. Today, we listened to this song (With My Own Two Hands) and talked about what it means to each one of us. Some of the responses were: * "We are big pre-kinergarteners now...so we can do so much to help." * "We help with taking out the trash and keeping our school clean." * "I help my Mom at home with my sister.", * "We have 2 hands and 2 feet, so we can be extra kind." * "We help the toddlers because they are just learning. They don't know the rules yet, like walking feet inside." * "We pick up trash outside and broken toys so that animals don't get hurt." The children used watercolor blue and green paint to begin to create their "Earth's". Yesterday, we placed a large icicle that was hanging from the school, into the baggie (it had broken into 3 pieces when we put it inside the bag). Then we placed the large "surprise icicle" into the bowl. The children wanted to see if the bowl icicle would melt quicker, or the one that was hanging. (*The one that was hanging did!) **The bag icicle was smaller and skinnier in size then the surprise one. Experiments continue.... A discussion at the lunch table: If you put the water in the baggie back outside...when it gets cold, will it turn back into an icicle. So, the experiment is in the process of being conducted. What do you think...will it turn back into an icicle (like it was) or will it just be ice? Look what we found outside after all the rain that we had last night and this morning....another huge snow covered icicle! :) Results: The bowl did not over flow!
Just a reminder, the Laurel School will be closed on Monday January 16th.
Today, we started talking about who Martin Luther King Jr was....and why he was so important. He was a very kind and loving man. We began by reading a book, followed by watching a short talk done by Kid President about the life of Martin Luther King Jr. We ended by watching and listening to a piece of the "I have a dream" speech. The children enjoyed watching the last piece, as they got to see Martin Luther King Jr and what he looked and sounded like. A few children were amazed at how many people listened to him speak, they said "There are that many people in the world?". We can all make this world a better place! What can you do with your hands to make our world a better place? Today, at the school Community Meeting, the children in Ms. Lynn's group performed their "surfer" dance. Then the Glee Club, did a dance and sang "The Colors Of The Wind" with Ms. Paige.
