Art with Ms. Alex. Creating unique names for the colors that we created.

The children in morning care have been drawing on this large sheet of paper. They have made several hearts, people and their names. They have been using red and pink crayons and markers. Today, these boys wanted to paint it red, using finger paint. What will be next to go on this masterpiece?
PlaydoughWe were hoping to get outside, but the temperature was too cold. We instead hosted Mentor Buddies in the PK classroom. The pre-kindergarten class chose to do playdough with the mentor buddies this week.
What would the title of your book be, if this was the picture on your front cover?
Evan: The Doggie Leaf Day Emily: A Cutie Dog Helen: Cutie Pirate Dog Kylie: Rainbow Aidan: Valentine's Day Ayden: A Scratchy Kitten Brayden: Curious Dog Thomas: The Doggie Ripped The Seat Alina: A very Very Cute Dog We started our H page today. H is for horseshoe crab. Fun facts: *Horseshoe crabs are not actually crabs. They are in the same animal family as insects. Their closest relative are spiders. *Birds eat horseshoe crab eggs. *Horseshoe crabs have 7 pairs of legs under their hard shells (they have no antennae and mandibles (jaws)). *Adult males have 2 special claws that look like small boxing gloves. *Female horseshoe crabs lay their eggs. (up to 20,000 pale green eggs). *Horseshoe crabs are colored to match the sandy bottom of the water (dark olive brown/light tan). *Horseshoe crabs don't swim a lot. But when they do, they use their tail as a rudder. They sometimes swim upside down. *Horseshoe crabs tail is called a telson. Their tail isn't poisonous and they don't sting people with them. Their tails are important as they use them when they are overturned. Their tails help them turn themselves back over to the correct side. *Horseshoe crabs do not bite. *Horseshoe crabs can live to be 30 years old. *Horseshoe crabs have been on Earth for a least 100 million years. They were already here when the dinosaurs arrived. *There were numerous species of horseshoe crabs, but only 4 species exist in the world today. *Barnacles, slipper shells and flatworms are some of the most popular sea creatures that like to make a horseshoe crab a "hotel". Finger painting the 3 major parts of the horseshoe crab: Shell (Prosoma), Abdomen, Tail (telson). We read a book about Martin Luther King Jr. We then watched and listened as Kid President retold who Martin Luther King Jr was. We listened to a song about how we can help do good things using our own two hands. W painted our hands and shared our ideas of how we help using our two hands. Book: Happy Birthday, Martin Luther King. (By: Jean Marzollo & Illustrator J. Brian Pinkney) With my own two hands, I can make the world a better place by... Helen: "Helping the Earth, by cleaning up the trash." Kylie: "Making a rainbow. I use my markers to make one." Vanessa: "Taking care of my elephant Bo-Bo (stuffed animal)." Ayden: "Bringing the food to the table at home." Emily: "Making a snowman." Evie: "Cleaning the dishes." Lily: "Helping friends up." Thomas: "Picking up garbage." Aidan: "Cleaning up my toys." Evan: "Cleaning it up with a mop." Alina: "Picking up trash, this helps the Earth. Also by not wasting the water at home." Brayden: "Going on an adventure, to Disney Land." We have 7 maroon chairs and 1 blue chair in the classroom. Each day, it is a big debate of who should sit in the blue chair. After a classroom discussion, the children decided that the "star of the day" should be able to sit there for snack and lunch time (if they want to).
The children thought that we should decorate the chair so that everyone would know (and remember). We took out the stars...and then voted on what color stars we should use. The two star colors with the highest number of votes were chosen (red & purple). My Mitten is so big, a ______ could fit inside of it.
Emily: big mouse Alina: Honey Bunny Helen: dog & a kitty Evan: a mouse Ayden: bear Aidan: car Vanessa: elephant Kylie: bear Evie: rat Lily: moving mouse Mentor Buddies (with the "Little's") we read the board book version of The Mitten, after we read the regular full version earlier in the day. The children noticed the similarities and difference in the 2 versions of the same story (ie. "The Little's version it didn't talk about the animals and what they looked like..like talons and the prickles.", "The pages were made different, ours was paper, theirs was cardboard." and "The pictures were bigger in our book.")
During Mentor Buddies the children colored mittens, sang a song about mittens (and moved their bodies) and then played with the toys in Ms. Julia & Megan's classroom). This winter...hibernate with a good book.
I will be posting pictures of the front covers of the books that have been brought in for Book Share. Next to them, there will be "recommendations" from the class, whether they liked the book or not. A bug was found on the bark of one of the trees on the playground. What does it do in the winter? Is it alive? It was gone about 5 minutes later (when we checked back on it). Where did it go?
In 2019, I want to learn how to ______________
Thomas: "Drive a car." Aidan: "Ride a bike with 4 tires." Lily: "Drive a little car." Brayden: "Fly a tiny airplane." Helen: "Learn how to be a doctor for animals." Emily: "Ride a bike with training wheels." Vanessa: "Drive a rainbow car." Alina: "Make a real snowflake." Ayden: "Drive a red car like my Mom's." Today in Mentor Buddies with Ms. Anita's class, we talked about "respect". Ms. Anita read the book The Crayon Box That Talked. We then talked about how we all go to school together and we are learning to get along with each other. We may look different and like different things, but we are all unique. We all have one kind and loving heart. If we were the same, it would be boring!
Next week, we will begin to talk about Martin Luther King Jr, as we have no school on Monday January 21st. We will also be talking about the "Friendship Quilt" that we will be starting in the next few weeks (Ms. Anita and myself will be sending home a letter about how all of you can create a section of the quilt at home). This afternoon, around dismissal, we had visitors in the parking lot. Ducks! Lots of them! They were flying in when I was leaving for the day. They were in the front circle as well as in the teachers parking area. Did you see them?
Book order forms were put in your child's cubbie. They are due at the end of the month, if you are interested in ordering any. There are some great deals!
