It is hard to believe how fast September is flying by.
This week we started out the week talking about similarities and differences among people. We talked about how each person is different and that is ok. The children used pencils to create a sketch of themselves.
In the science area of the classroom, the children used their senses to explore a coconut. We talked about what the outside of the coconut looked like. We thought opening the coconut was going to be an easy task (as I have opened many before). But this one was challenging. We used a hammer and a nail. We tried a cork screw. But nothing worked. The shell was extremely hard. The children brain stormed ideas. We tried all different ideas out (ie. putting the coconut under a pillow and then hitting it with a hammer, using a rock, rolling it, bouncing it on the grass, rolling it down the tallest slide on the playground, etc.). The last idea was to toss it up in the air and have it land on the black top. It WORKED! It cracked enough so that we could use the hammer and the nail to open it the rest of the way. Once the coconut was open, the children explored the inside it using their senses.
This week we had our first fire drill. We first had a pre-practice one, so that the children would know where to go and what the alarm sounded like. Then the fire department came and we did a fire drill with them. The children did a great job during both of them! They knew what to do the second time! :)
Poetry Journal: The children illustrated a poem about a coconut for their poetry journals.
Learn to Play: This week we talked to our "Buddies" about what they like to do on the playground. For the first 15 minutes, our Buddies showed us what they like to do on the playground and for the last 15 minutes we showed them what we like to do. We found out that some of us liked the same thing (ie. kick ball, swings, climbing, slides, etc.).
Science with Preschool 3: This week we have begun to talk about our senses. We talked about what our senses are and over the next few weeks we will look at each one in depth.
Spanish: This week, we had our first Spanish class. The children are beginning to learn the colors in Spanish. This week they learned that the color red is called "rojo".
Art: Check out Ms. Anastaci's blog on The Laurel School website.
Life Sports: Check out Coach Jake's blog on The Laurel School website.
Music: The children are learning Fall themed songs.
