Candle the pumpkin has been sending "mail" to us each day. Since the day after she was carved. She either sends us a note with a new song, poem or a question. She has also been answering questions that we have about her (ie. is she a girl or a boy? She is a girl. How did she become magic? The hat that Edward put on her head. The fire fighter hat. etc.)
The children kept saying: "The towels are smoking!" When they saw the steam rising from the towels as the sun was warming them up on a chilly morning (we had just dried the swings and slide with the towels and hung them over the fence to dry). Then they noticed the smoke from the chimney.
We sketched some ideas on what we thought the "jack-o'lantern" should look like.
We took the top of the pumpkin and some friends helped clean the pumpkin out of seeds and pulp. Carving the pumpkin into a "Jack-o-lantern" and then coming up with name ideas to call the pumpkin. Pumpkin name ideas: Nika: "Sofia" Edward: "Stumpkin" Margo: "Some-kin" Stephyn: "Smiling" Kendall: "Candle" Alex: "Zee-za" Ty: "Jack-o-lantern" Drum Roll.....the name that was chosen out of the bucket by Ms. Lynn was "Candle" submitted by Kendall. How much does the pumpkin weigh? 19 pounds. We also weighed ourselves on the scale. Everyone took a turn. : ) We weigh more than the pumpkin.
Sink vs Float: The children made predictions whether or not certain objects would sink or float (seashell, wooden block, beach ball leaf, mason jar cover, plastic gem, rock, pumpkin). Then we tested each object out to see whether we were correct or not.
Pumpkin InvestigationUsing our senses to explore our classroom pumpkin. Drawing a picture of what the pumpkin looks like.
What is a provocation?
Provocations provoke thought, discussions, questions, interests, creativity and ideas. They can also expand on a thought, project, idea or interests. Mentor Buddies: We are in the process of building a tree in the hall (next to our classroom). We colored the tree last week with our little buddies and today, we each took a turn adding leaves to the tree.
Kendall brought in a special treat to share with the Pre-k classrooms. Thank you Kendall! Your classmates loved them! : )
We will be presenting our "house" project next month at Community Meeting. It is a process and it has taken a whole new twist. These homes may not look like the ones that we live in, but the children are the architects of their future homes. The children are learning that there are towns on Cape Cod that there classmates live in. They also are becoming aware about special features that their own homes have (doors, windows, roofs, yards, trees, back and front, sides. Does it have stairs inside? stairs outside? sliding doors? driveways? etc.).
The children were excited to show me their robots that they are making in art class with Ms. Alex. Here is a sneak peak of what they are doing in art!
Question (the children came up with): Do you think the other animals will grow big like the lobster? (rubber duck and bunny)
Yes or No? Margo: Yes Kendall: Yes Stephyn: Yes Alex: Yes Edward: Yes Daniel: Yes *no one thinks that they will stay the same size. They all think that the other rubber animals will grow bigger. We all have our own container of playdough in the classroom. We are working on name recognition. : )
