Magnet Tiles are a big hit in our classroom. Last week, I posted some pictures of children creating skyscrapers and other tall buildings. They experimented with different surfaces (ie. rug and the sensory table, etc.). This week, one classmate figured out that you can build other shapes inside of a cube or inside a triangle. Engineering skills!

Story Stretcher: This week, we read the book Chicka Chicka Boom Boom. We pointed out the differences between lowercase and uppercase letters. We noticed that lowercase letters are more curvy and uppercase letters are more straight lines. We had a coconut taste test. We made a graph of who liked it and who didn't. We illustrated a poem for our Poetry Journal (which will go home at the end of the school year).
Cape Cod Alphabet Book: This year, your child will be creating a Cape Cod Alphabet Book (this book will go home at the end of the year). This week we started by reading the book, Journey Around Cape Cod & The Islands (From A-Z). We talked about the job of an "author" as well as an "illustrator". Letter A: Alewife
We learned that an Alewife is a specific type of herring. Alewives are found on Cape Cod. We read that people use to eat them a long time ago as well as use them to fertilize their crops. Today, many people use them as "bait" to catch striped bass as well as lobsters. We learned that a school of alewives or herring is called a "school". We talked briefly about migration. A few of the alewives predators are: seagulls, people and the weather. Alewives hatch from eggs. Today, Senora Mary, worked on animal names and the color red. Here are the word that they are working on.
Pato: duck Perro: dog Mono: monkey Elepfante: elephant Tigre: tiger Pinguino: penguin Rojo: red Yesterday, the children noticed that there was a spider under the easel, that we brought in from outside. The children wanted to know if the spider was going to build a spiderweb. We left it overnight. Ms. Lynn noticed it this morning. She was going to remove it. We told her not to hurt it, as our classroom has a "catch and release" policy (with naming rights). We noticed that there are about 20 spider "babies". We have put the "Mumma" spider and her "babies" in this plastic container. We have poked holes in it..and will watch them for today.
"Drab to Fab": These wonderful artists have started this year's Drab to Fab project. They watched a short movie about the artist Jackson Pollock. Then they went outside and worked together to start their DTF project. (Step 1: Sanding the chairs)
Today, in Buddies, we watched a short movie about Johnny Appleseed, as yesterday, was his birthday. We also had some rainy day fun together...we did some freeze dancing.
These young building engineers were hard at work in the block area today. A few friends asked to move the magnetic tiles into the sensory table, so that their masterpieces wouldn't fall over so easy (as they do on the rug). Their ideas worked! Here are some of their creations.
Trains...are another popular place in the block area. These 2 boys, were working cooperatively together to build a long railroad track. Today, we met with our new "Buddies". We will be working with Ms. Tara and the Kindergarten/First Grade this year.
We visited their classroom today. We noticed a lot of similarities and some differences in their classroom (when compared to ours). We read a book and talked about being kind to our families, friends and teachers. We talked about kind things/ations that people do for us...and what we can do for others. We want to fill up other people's "invisible buckets". We don't want to be "bucket dippers". Then we ventured out into the Meditation Garden, where we created "fairy houses". Today, a few children noticed that the tree near the playground has lots of branches. One child said "I never noticed the branches until we just stopped under it." Another child said "the branches are hairy looking."
Lost & Found clothes and shoes left over from summer camp. The clothes that had names, we were able to get back to it original owners. Everything must go...or it will be donated to the local swap shop.
