The Art & Literature Faire is tonight from 5-7 PM.
Where...at the Laurel School. Come check out the Laurel School as it is transformed into "nature" themes. Bake sale, raffles, book signing. A photo booth/room. Lots of fun for the whole family! :) Buddies with the "Little's": We showed them how to build a snowman in a bag. We then taped it on the outside of their classroom window. (It was hard to find the snow...it is melting fast!).
We also sang Frosty The Snowman together. Science Co-op: The children shared what they already knew about snowmen. Then Ms. Anita went outside and got 2 bags of snow (It is too cold for the children to go out...21 degrees). We then created snow people...one named "Jacob" and one named "Lacey" (the children came up with the names). We placed Jacob inside, on top of the cubbies...under the thermostat, and Lacey outside, next to Pouty Pumpkin. Will they melt? Will they stay frozen? Water or snow...what will they be?
The children have noticed that Pouty Pumpkin, our classroom pumpkin has been getting eaten (as well as rotting) outside our classroom window. Today, when I came into school, I was able to answer their question "Who has been eating Pouty Pumpkin?". The children looked at the picture during circle time. Frank the squirrel has been eating the pumpkin (and corn). The squirrel took all the corn off the ear and put it on the pumpkin.
$8.00
Please see Ms. Courtney if you would like to purchase one (or more)! Great pictures inside! The holidays are here....these would make a great present or a stocking stuffer! :) Today, during Mentor Buddies the Pre-K and Toddler groups got together and had playtime outside. We continue to talk about "kindness" and "respect". Pre-K is learning that the toddlers are little people. They do not take batteries (as one of the Pre-K students asked last week). They have skin and hair like we do as well as feelings. They do not need to be picked up and that they can walk and run. We need to be gentle around them and use our soft voices, as not to scare them. Today, one of the toddlers, was taught by a Pre-K student how to walk across the "bridge". The toddler, held his hand at first, as he gave her verbal reminders, "step over, step over. Stop at the end. Jump!". He was so happy to see her do it on her own after 8x of him helping her. The House: A few Pre-K friends were talking with one of the toddlers in the house. They were talking about going to the "doctors" and the "dentist". Since a few of the Pre-K friends have been turning 5...they have been going to the doctors for check ups. This topic has been a popular one...especially shots! Tunnel & Sandbox play! Come check out the "Art & Literature Faire" tab on the blog. Some pictures and activities have been posted in there! : )
Today, we had a fire drill. Some of our friends in the classroom are still nervous about the loud sound. At circle time, we talked about why we have fire drills (to know what to do in case their was a real emergency at school).
I shared with the children that there are many safety devices in our classroom. I talked about each one (pointing them out in the classroom). Some of the devices are... 1. Emergency lighting (in case the power goes out) 2. First Aid kit (bandages, thermometer, ice packs, etc) 3. Fire Extinguisher (puts out fire) *They all don't have water in them 4. Smoke detector (Smells smoke and then buzzes to let us know) 5. Carbon Monoxide Detector (it smells fumes that we can't smell) 6. Fire Alarm (a grown up/teacher can pull it in case there is a fire or an emergency) When, we saw, the fire department (ambulance and truck) pull into the driveway, we put on our coats. We reviewed what we were going to do when the buzzer went off (line up quietly and walk through Ms. Lynn's classroom to the basketball court. Line up and then I would take attendance). We then heard the "alarm" go off. We stopped briefly in the hall to look at the flashing light (that was also "buzzing"). The children did a great job staying together and walking safely to the basketball court. Then they did a wonderful job saying "here I am!" loudly as they raised their hand when their name was called. After, we practiced the "primary" route with the fire department. We then practiced the "secondary" route (on our own). We talked about if there was ever a reason we couldn't go out Ms. Lynn's door, we would go out our backdoor and through our garden to the parking lot, then through the gate to the basketball court. While we were outside, the fire department, put on the siren so that we could hear them. So cool! : ) School Community MeetingToday, Ms. Amanda's, preschool class, presented a yoga sequence that they do each morning. Ms. Karin's class, presented work that they have been doing regarding island's, pond's, rivers and volcanoes. They also shared their stories that they wrote about scarecrows.
Mark your calendars....
