Irish musicians, Kevin Crawford & Cillian Valiely entertained the Laurel School today! They were amazing! A few of the elementary students showed off their Irish dance steps, as well as Jonathan F. accompanied them on his tin whistle!

The preschool wing as well as the kindergarten won the first round of the contest for collecting the most Box Tops for Education! The prize was a pajama pizza party! :)
The Laurel School will be having an early dismissal on Wednesday December 3rd at 1 PM.
There is a conference sign up sheet on the entrance to our classroom. If a time does not work for you, please let me know as my schedule is flexible. Thank you ~Ms. Nancy :) Learn To Play: This week, due to the rainy weather, we stayed inside. The children played a game with their buddies called Bandz. The children chose a picture card and then hid it from one child. The child who couldn't see the picture needed to ask questions to receive clues on what the picture might be. Then the child guessed what it was. It reminded some of the preschool friends of Mystery Share. (ie. a picture of a slice of pizza, a light bulb, a butterfly, etc.).
Art & Literature Faire: See updates on the tab "Art & Literature Faire" Art: We would like to welcome our new art teacher, Ms. Jen, to The Laurel School. The children enjoyed reading a book today and then painting (and mixing colors). Science Co-Op: This week we read a book called, What Food Is This (Rosemarie Hausherr). In the book, it talked about each of the food groups and where the food comes from (how it is grown). The children then drew a picture of healthy foods they like to eat. Random Acts Of Kindness: We reviewed the answers to the questions that we asked Ms. Amy. The children were excited to learn that Ms. Amy liked ketchup with her eggs at breakfast, that she liked to go clothes shopping in Boston and that she wanted to write a book about a llama. We will be choosing another teacher when we get back from Thanksgiving break. Curriculum: This week we talked about our families. The children drew pictures of their families and then shared them with the class. They talked about the members of their immediate families and other relatives and who they are related to (ie. grandparents who are their mom/dad's parents, uncles/aunts are brother's and sisters to their parents, etc.). The children also talked about what they do on Thanksgiving and what they eat. Community Circle: This week we presented our Thanksgiving pictures to the rest of the preschool wing. The children talked about what they like to eat on Thanksgiving. Parent Conferences: There will be parent conferences on Wednesday December 3rd. We will be having an early dismissal at 1:00 PM. If you feel that you need a conference or if you have other goals that you would like to set for your child, there is a sign up sheet on the entrance to our classroom. If these times do not work for you, please let me know, my schedule is pretty flexible. Books we read this week: *Pattern In The Jungle (Joyce Markovics) *Gracias, The Thanksgiving Turkey (Joy Cowley) *Why The Sky Is So Far Away *What Food Is This (Rosemarie Hausherr). Learn To Play: This week we got to watch as our "Buddies" put on skits with Grades 3, 4 & 5. Grades 1-5 participate in Co-Op Buddies. The children are given 5 random words and sometimes a prop. The children then are put in small groups. They then come up with a small skit using the random words (and prop). The children do it on their own with hardly any input from the teachers. Preschool 4, got invited to watch the skits today. They enjoyed them! The 4 words today that we picked up on were Boston, bandaids, banjo and bear, We think the other one might have been border. Art & Literature Faire: This week we compared the type of homes we have here on Cape Cod, compared to homes that are found in Nigeria (Africa). The children noted the differences that their homes have, compared to the homes in a book. We talked about yards, number of doors and windows, color of the homes and materials that they are made out of, types of roofs and roads that their homes have. Random Acts Of Kindness: We have been learning about the Laurel School community, especially all the people that work in the school. This week we chose Ms. Amy's name out of the bag. The children made pictures for Ms. Amy. They came up with questions of wonder to ask Amy. Some of the questions were what is your favorite book, animal, and food to eat at breakfast. Other questions were how old are you, what color is your house and why do you like llamas. The children gave Ms. Amy their pictures and a cup of flowers that we found in the garden at school. Ms. Amy said that she loved them and it made her feel special. We are waiting the answers to the questions we asked her. On Thursday, we watched as tree trimmers trimmed the tops of the trees on the elementary school playground. The children were excited to see the man get into the cherry picker and ride it all the way up to the top of the tall trees. It was amazing the sound that the branches made as they hit the ground, "thud". One child said that "it sounded like a drum when the branch hit the Earth!" Books that we have read this week: *Where the Wild Things Are (Maurice Sendak). *Breathe (Scott Magoon) *Little Green Peas: A big book of colors (Keith Baker) *Chugga Chugga Choo Choo (Kevin Lewis) *Why The Earth Is So Far Away *Unicorns (*it talked about African unicorns) Pictures: L-R: Top- Cherry picker, children watching the cherry picker truck trim the playground trees. Just a reminder that we have no school tomorrow. We will be closed in observance of Veteran's Day. Hi Families... It is hard to believe that it is already November! We have been finishing up talking about pumpkins this week. The children sequenced the life cycle of the pumpkin both on paper and with their body. We also added potting soil to the little pumpkin and put saran wrap around it. It is on the windowsill in hopes that it will sprout over the next few months. The children also illustrated the song, "5 Little Pumpkins". On Thursday, the children made Happy Birthday cards and pictures for Dr. Jeff. Then they visited him in his office, to give them the cards/pictures. We have been playing an acorn math game. The children roll the dice, count the dots and then put that many acorns on their squirrel grid board. Art & Literature Faire: We are continuing to talk about the Art & Literature Faire. We have chosen the book that we are going to discuss. The children have started talking about ideas we should do to help illustrate the story. Please see the tab "Art & Literature Faire" for more details about what we have been doing. Learn to Play: This week we played on the big playground. Some of us played soccer, while others jumped in piles of leaves and some just sat and talked with their buddies. We also visited our "Buddies" on Friday. We sang songs together, shared a snack and played outside for a little bit. Reminders: 1. Please remember that we will be closed next Tuesday in observance of Veterans Day. 2. As the seasons change, please remember to change the type of extra clothes your child has in their cubby. (Please change out the shorts and add pants, etc.). 3. If possible, could your child leave in their cubby a reusable cup, for water. Thank you for all that you do! :) Pictures: L-R:
