Today in Science Co-op, we stayed inside, due to the rain. We watched a short movie on the 4 seasons. We then looked at pictures, that Ms. Nancy took of our seed bombs, under our adopted tree (from earlier in the day). We enjoyed an indoor picnic lunch together.
Our first impressions...Today we learned about the parts of an apple, the skin, the stem and the leaf. A few of the children first thought that the stem was called an antenna. The children created their own apple using clay, pipe cleaners and straws.
Ms. Jen (Mrs. L) wanted me to share with you that the children are learning about Jackson Pollack in art class. They watched an educational video on "Action Jackson".
This will translate into a cooperative project with Miss Annalisa's and Miss Lynn's class in the process of painting one picnic table during art. Story stretcher of the month...Chicka Chicka Boom Boom (By: Bill Martin Jr. & John Archambault)This week, we did a story stretcher of Chicka Chicka Boom Boom. The children created a few pieces of art, which are on display in the hall and in the classroom. They also used shapes to create their own palm trees (both flat as well as tall). The finale of the week was we opened the coconut outside on the playground The children used their senses to explore the broken coconut. **see the newsletter in your child's cubby for more detail! :)
Our oak tree...This year, we will be observing how this oak tree changes as the seasons change. It is still summer here on Cape Cod. Today in science Co-op, we read a story (sorry that the picture isn't rotated upright) and then the children looked at the tree from a distance as well as close up. They talked with friends and teachers about what they saw and then drew a picture of our little oak tree. We talked about the parts of the tree (roots, trunk, branches, leaves and bark).
Today we met our Mentor's (Buddies). We will be working with the 5th & 6th graders this year. We had snack together and then we played a getting to know you game. We also met Mickey and Pearl, their parakeets.
A question came up during a discussion about the dentist and what types of toothbrushes we all have. I am not sure of the answer to the question. So ...here is something to ponder!
"Why does the Tooth Fairy and the Leprechaun do not go to the mall to visit with kids. But Santa and the Bunny do? We want to be able to see the Tooth Fairy and the Leprechaun, like we get to see the Bunny and Santa." Today we talked about what a "First Responder" is and what they do to help the community. We will never forget how the First Responders helped our country on September 11th and we will always remember all the people they helped.
The children created American Flags in remembrance of the First Responders. Getting to know our new friends and our school play space. Geoboards, Lego's, blocks, instruments, puppet shows, snack time, cars and magnet tiles. We had lots of fun in week number 1!
*Our classroom weekly newsletter was put in your child's cubbie to go home! : ) Today in Science Co-Op (with Ms. Lynn's class), we adopted a tree on the Peaceful Path in the Meditation Garden. Here is a picture of it. Over the course of the year, we will be observing and studying in during the changing seasons.
The Preschool wing made 2 cakes for Senora Mary's birthday. Pre-kindergarten decorated the cakes with frosting and sprinkles. We also made birthday pictures for Senora Mary.
