Book: Mike Mulligan And His Steam Shovel (By: Virginia Burton)
*We sequenced the story (ie. 1. Mike Mulligan and Mary Anne, 2. Goes to Popperville, 3. Dug the cellar, 4. Mary Anne becomes the furnace of the new building).
Small Group: Sequence picture cards...the story of the snowman. We practiced left to right sequencing and putting the pictures in the order of how you want to tell the story. Many different options.
Buddies: Indoor free play (ie. dominoes, Lego's, board games, map skills, etc.). We found Antarctica on the map (home of the Emperor Penguin).
Tuesday:
Emperor Penguin: Finishing up and reviewing.
Small Group: Draw a pictures of what penguins can do, have and what they are. Some examples were ...penguins are birds or black and white, they have flippers or webbed feet and can swim or waddle.
Science: Measuring the snow in the front circle of the school. We then made predictions of when we thought the snow would melt. We also filled the bird feeders. We then played outside.
Art:
Book: Harold and the Purple Crayon and a project with Mrs. L.
Spanish: Dancing with stuffed animals and singing Spanish songs
Wednesday:
Drama: We watched the dress rehearsal of the Cinderella play presented by Grades 5 and kindergarten.
Book: About Penguins: A Guide For Children (By: Cathryn Sill)
Small Group: We started making a chart comparing and contrasting African Penguins with the Emperor Penguins. We looked at the map and found Africa (which was easy for the children after studying Africa for the Art and Literature Faire). We then talked about the southern coast, where the African Penguins live.
Thursday:
Book: 10 Things I know about Penguins (By: Wendy Wax)
Small Group: African Penguin project. We traced 1 of our shoes. We cut out our shoe shape. We added African Penguin characteristics (eyes, flippers, freckles, feet, etc) using crayon. We then glued it onto a backdrop to dry.
Penguin Chart: Added more details that we learned about the African Penguin.
March Math-ness: Book: Shapes, Patterns in the Natural World! We found assorted shapes around the classroom (IE. water table, shelves, books, rug, lunch boxes, plastic plates/cups, toys, etc.)
Friday:
Happy Friday the 13th!!
Community Circle: Penguin Shuffle action poem & Penguin Pokey
Book: March of the Penguins (By: Luc Jacquet). We did a picture walk through that showed real Emperor Penguins (life cycle). We borrowed the book from Ms. Jane in Kindergarten.
Thank you to Jennifer (JC's Mom) for donating the Scholastic News to our classroom. The children found the article about the "Rover" penguins to be interesting. They were equally excited to bring a copy of the article home to show their families.
Music: The children played Music Maker and did the Freeze Dance with Mrs. B!
Kindergarten: Today we played outside on the preschool playground with our kindergarten buddies.
