Good news, the blog is up and running! I will be adding more to it (including pictures of the children). If you have any questions or ideas that could be added to it, please let me know.
Whole School Morning Meeting: We started off the school week with a whole school morning meeting. The classrooms all came together outside on the playground to talk about what they have done so far in September. They showed projects that they have been working on. The preschool wing performed the song, One Love, by Bob Marley. We had simple hand/arm movement and danced with scarves.
Community Circle: Each morning at 9 AM the preschool wing will join together in the big room for a brief circle. We have started learning The Laurel School song.
Learn to Play: This week we met the 2nd graders in their classroom. They gave us a brief tour of their classroom. We talked about what was the same and what was different about our classroom and theirs. There was more similarities then differences. We played the name game, as we are trying to learn all their names. They showed us a hermit crab that was visiting them. The hermit crab's name is "Ash". We talked briefly about animals that live in shells. The children then asked the 2nd graders questions about hermit crabs (ie. what do they eat, do they pinch, etc.). We borrowed a book about the human body, as the children were interested in it. The body in 3D!
Science: We started off by watering our acorns. We looked for any signs of growth. So far there is nothing to report. We then talked about what science is. The children came up with a list of ideas what they wanted to learn about this year in science. One of the ideas was to build a volcano. All the children built a volcano using the sand from outside. Ms. Lynn read a book about volcano's to the children from The Laurel School library. Then we mixed baking soda, food coloring and vinegar in a small plastic cup and we watched the volcano erupt.
Art: The children continued on the print making process. The children painted a small portion of the table with paint. Then they used their fingers to make different types or line and shapes. Then they used white paper to make the print.
Music: This week we learned a few more ways to warm up our voices/vocal chords and faces. We learned to make prune face/excited face and breathing by barking and panting. The children practiced Home On The Range as well as songs that are familiar to them (shake your sillies out, wheels on the bus, twinkle twinkle little star). We also learned a new song "Acorn". (*see song page for the words to the song).
Sports Plus: Coach Jake was absent for today's class. Therefore we went on a scavenger hunt looking for different color objects on the elementary school playground.
Cape Cod Alphabet Book: This week we started our alphabet book. A is for alewife. The children used crayons and construction paper to create their alewife. Then they did a small writing assignment to go along with their page.
Poetry Journal: We illustrated another poem. The name of the poem was September by Maurice Sendak.
This week in our classroom we read and talked about the book One Love (based on the song by Bob Marley). The children used scissors to snip red pieces of construction paper. We talked about scissor safety (IE. how to walk safely with scissors, the correct way to hold scissors, etc.). The children created a heart paper collage using their snippets of paper. Then we talked about the sound that the first letter in our name makes. The children then came up with a word that made the same sound as in their name as well as something they liked.
We danced with scarves to the CD B is for Bob (songs by Bob Marley).
