I would like to thank the families who have brought in their child's classroom supplies for the school year. If you haven't already, could you please send in a smock/art shirt for your child. We will be using these often. This shirt/smock can be any type of shirt that can go over your child's shirt, so that it can protect the clothes that they have on. I ask that you write their name on it with a permanent black marker. I will launder these shirts/smocks as needed.
Open House: It was nice to see a few families at this year's open house. If you didn't make it, please do not worry. It was a hectic time, the end of the day, supper time and at the beginning of the week. So this is a little bit of what you missed. Dr. Jeff talked for the first half hour. He talked about the new "specials" that the children will experience (IE. Spanish, art, science, music, Learn to Play, Sports Plus, etc.). We will be having these "specials" weekly. I will be sending home the schedule, once it is finalized. He also talked about the philosophy of the school (check out his blog on The Laurel website). Then the children gave their families a tour of the school. They showed them the different classrooms that we go to and introduced them to the other teachers in the school. So if you didn't make the Open House, please ask your child for a tour at your convenience.
Sports Plus: This week we met our new coach. His name is Coach Jake. The children played catch using tennis balls. He paired the children up with a classmate and they tossed the ball underhand to their partner. After Sports Plus, we made a book for Coach Jake. The children drew a picture of what they wanted to learn how to do this year in Sports Plus. Some of the ideas were how to run fast and stop safely, do the hula using a hula hoop, climb a tree, play soccer, be a goalie and play baseball. The children then gave Coach Jake their book. *I ask that all children wear sneakers on Thursday's! Thanks!
Art: The children experimented with the print process. The children used tempera paint and painted a portion of the table. Then they laid construction paper shapes on top of their paint. Then they placed white paper on top and pressed down.
Learn to Play (Buddies with 2nd grade): We went on the elementary playground with the 2nd graders. The children were paired up with a buddy. They explored the playground together and got to play with their buddy (IE. wiffle ball, swings, rock wall, etc.).
Science (with Preschool 3): This week we found acorns on the playground. We talked about how an acorn is a seed. We had a tour of the greenhouse. The children planted acorns in soil. We also planted a few acorns in peat moss and sand. Which one will sprout first?
Music: This week in music we talked about the importance of warming up our voices. Ms. Kathleen walked us through how to warm up our voices/vocal chords by breathing in through our noses and then doing roller coaster sounds. We then sang songs both familiar to us, as well as we started learning the words to Home On The Range.
This week in our classroom, we read the book Mouse Paint. The children experimented with mixing the primary colors (red, yellow and blue). The children painted their hands choosing 2 primary colors and then they rubbed their hands together to create a new color. Then they did a small writing assignment to go with it.
Next week: We will start talking about what makes us special and we will be starting our alphabet book.
Thank you for all that you do!
Mrs. Nancy
